However, regulatory hurdles have emerged, as evidenced by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's (FERC) recent rejection of Talen Energy's request to increase power supply to Amazon from its Susquehanna nuclear plant. The FERC cited concerns about grid reliability and affordability, signaling a potential challenge for future co-location agreements. This regulatory scrutiny underscores the complex interplay between energy demand, technological innovation, and government oversight.

The FERC's decision had a ripple effect, impacting even seemingly unrelated nuclear energy companies. Constellation Energy (CEG), the largest nuclear operator in the US, saw its stock price decline despite reporting positive earnings and revenue. This dip, attributed to the fallout from the Talen news, highlights the interconnectedness of the nuclear energy sector and the sensitivity of investors to regulatory decisions.

CFRA analyst Paul Rich considers Constellation a prime buying opportunity, emphasizing its dominant position in the nuclear market with a capacity more than three times larger than its nearest competitor. While currently nonexistent in the United States, SMRs are viewed as a promising avenue for affordably expanding the power grid and meeting the escalating energy requirements of AI. Amazon, in particular, has shown interest in SMRs as a potential solution to its growing energy needs.

The scale of the energy challenge posed by the AI boom is substantial. Apollo Global Management chief economist Torsten Sløk estimates that the equivalent of three New York Cities' worth of power will need to be added to the grid by 2030 to accommodate the projected demand from artificial intelligence. This staggering figure underscores the urgency and magnitude of the task facing the energy sector.

The convergence of AI, Big Tech, and nuclear energy presents a complex and dynamic landscape. While regulatory hurdles and market fluctuations create uncertainty, the underlying demand for reliable and sustainable energy remains strong.
